In my institute class (Pearl of Great Price) we have been studying Joseph Smith-History. I've read it before and learned about Joseph Smith, but I don't think it has ever touched me with so much sweetness and peace as it has this past week. When I was reading the account of the First Vision I almost felt like he was there telling me the story and I could just
feel it more than usual. I am so grateful for the prophet Joseph Smith. I am so grateful for the courage that he had. I am so grateful that he thought so much about and sought for the truth. I work at the middle school and it's amazing to think of a boy only 14 years old being so humble and full of faith that he could receive such life changing revelation. It almost seems unbelievable but you know what? I believe it 100%. The world is full of so much confusion and distraction, so many theories and complexities, but the gospel is the one true course that can get us through. I think sometimes I just make life way too complicated when it doesn't have to be. I feel happy when I am full of faith and relying on my Savior to get me through. It's as simple as that. Joseph Smith had incredible hardships from the time he was very young but he found a way to rely on Heavenly Father and the Savior for his support. I'm so glad I had the chance to read his testimony and realize that although our experiences are very different, the same principles still apply. I'm grateful for the way he dedicated his life to the Savior and proved to me that it's possible.
I also had the opportunity last week to go to a ward Relief Society dinner. Our stake relief society president is a kindergarten teacher and she talked to us about our individual worth as daughters of God. She is a kindergarten teacher and used comparisons from her students so I especially appreciated her talk. I can't wait to have my own students to learn from! She talked about teaching them to notice details and how we can apply the same thing in our lives by noticing the details of how we serve the people around us, strengthen our families, how we worship, etc. It was a very filling evening, literally and spiritually! (The food was amazing by the way. We ate at the Garden House and their soup was incredible!)
At the end of the evening our relief society presidency gave each of us a boquet of origami flowers they had folded. They are beautiful! I'm sure it took them hours to fold them! I'm really glad I went because I've had a hard time feeling like I fit in with the girls in my ward. I know part of it is my own fault because I occasionally give in to my shyness and insecurities instead of putting myself out there to make friends when it might be difficult. I really felt loved and part of an important sisterhood though and I know that I can learn from each of the other girls. They probably just feel shy too! :) I also really liked the quote they attached to the boquet. It said:
"Beauty is life when life unveils her holy face.
But you are life and you are the veil.
Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.
But you are eternity and you are the mirror."
~Kahlil Gibran
